DIY Bathroom Air Freshener

Living in a home with six other people can get a little crowded.  Especially when most of you share one main bathroom.  With so much traffic in and out of the bathroom, it is important to keep it clean and smelling fresh.  I love how easy it was to put together this all natural DIY Bathroom Air Freshener using essential oils.

DIY Bathroom Air Freshener Ingredients

• 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
• 1 cup of water
• 1 Tablespoon of salt
• 15-20 drops of essential oils – your choice of scent
• glass jar

Optional supplies:

• food coloring
• artificial flowers

First you need to make your gelatin base.  Start by heating up 3/4 cup of water in a pot with your salt.  Once the salt is melted, add your packages of gelatin.  You need to slowly add the gelatin while stirring constantly.  It will clump, so use a spoon to smash and stir until it is well blended.  Once it is all mixed, add the remaining water.

Remove from heat and stir.  Pour directly into your mason jar.

Add your essential oils.  I used orange and lavender together.  It smells heavenly!

I used 10-12 drops of orange and 5-8 drops of lavender.  Stir slightly to evenly blend your oils into your entire jar.

Now is where you would add your optional food coloring.  I created two batches of gel air fresheners, one with food coloring and one without.  I prefer without when using artificial flowers.  If you do decide to use food coloring, remember one drop goes a long ways.  I made mine too dark the first time.

You can wait a few minutes after pouring the gelatin mixture into your mason jar before adding your flowers.  The faster you add them, the more likely they are to float to the top or move around.  I used a small wooden stick to push my flowers into place.  I wanted to be able to see the top of the flower on the side of the jar.  This is merely a personal preference.  Feel free to only add the flower petals if you like.

The gelatin will thicken faster if you place it in the refrigerator.  I left mine in there for an hour, but that wasn’t necessary.

While your DIY Bathroom Air Freshener is setting in place, now is time to make a lid.  You can leave the lid off your air freshener but it will dry out faster.  To make the scent last longer place the mason jar ring back on with a ventilated top.

I used scrapbook paper and punched holes in it for a vent.  I have seen and heard that some people use fabric.  However, I would imagine the fabric would absorb the essential oils and fragrance faster than the scrapbook paper.
