Summer is almost here for my kids. Their last day of school is June 4th, this Friday. I have written several posts about how Gab is a total game’aholic. She plays the Wii, her Nintendo DS and my favorite: her Leapster. She also plays several computer games on our home desktop. I especially approve of her playing the JumpStart CD-ROMs because they are learning games.
With summer approaching I know the kids will be home more than usual and in Texas the summer heat can be unbearable which keeps them indoors quite a bit. I should be prepared with indoor activities and games all planned out for our summer, but truth is I’m not. I have some ideas of places I want to take the kids and I am just now starting to brainstorm and seek out some educational ideas to keep the children from falling behind during their school break.
T enjoys her time indoors as well. She loves watching movies and honestly is more of a Television’aholic than a game’aholic like Gab. T does enjoy her computer time and she gets on MySpace, watches music videos on You Tube and has now even begun to blog. My main concern with either of the girls being on the computer is cybersafety. T knows all the rules and Gab hasn’t learned to actually surf the web yet so right now all she does is click the desktop icons that take her directly to the website she plays on. I monitor their activity to the best of my ability and always check out the sites before I let Gab play on them. There are so many websites for kids out there now that it’s hard to keep track of them all. I just try to pick a couple for her to use and stick with them so it’s easier to monitor.
What are your summer plans? Do you have some great educational activities planned to do with your kids? I’d love for you to share some ideas within the comments below. Have you written a blog post recently about summer fun? Share the link in a comment for others to read.
Hey! Next week’s theme on my blog is basically “how to survive the extra downtime with your kid”, or “getting through outings”. If you’d like to post some tips for “Tuesday tips”, send them to me. Thanks!
Kim
The way I get through the summer is to try to plan at least one “big” activity per day, whether it’s Great Adventure, the beach, or even just going to a playground. I find if I have an “agenda” things go more smoothly with the extra time I have with both kids. Planning is key!
