Managing Cold Season

Battling the cold and flu season each year is a headache in itself. Going in public places and hearing the people sneezing and coughing around me creeps me out. It takes a lot for me to step foot in a doctor’s office during the winter months for the mere fact that I know I’ll be surrounded by germs. When my daughter’s checkups with her specialists are during these months I always take extra precautions to boost our health and stir clear of germs.
Hand Washing
I make sure I stay on top of my kids about washing their hands. Before and after each meal. After each trip to the restroom. Also when we are in public and they touch the railing on the a staircase or any other surface that I know is covered in germs I try to remind them to use their hand sanitizer.
Use Tissues
Teaching my kids during their toddler years to stop using their sleeve and grab a tissue to wipe their nose was one of my biggest pet peeves. I know, my first thought is how nasty it is. All year I carry pocket-sized tissues in my purse. The kids also have them in their backpacks. Keeping your runny nose clean with a tissue that you can then dispose of is the most sanitary way to go.
Know Where to Sneeze
I love that my son learned in elementary school to sneeze or cough in his elbow instead of his hand. This allows his shirt to catch the germs instead of on his hand where he will then spread by touching things. When a sudden sneeze or cough comes on, we don’t always have time to grab a tissue but bending our arm to catch our own germs helps protect those around us.
Stay Hydrated
This is the most difficult for my second child. I’m not sure if it comes with her special needs but Gabby rarely drinks anything. I have to constantly remind her and sometimes even set a rule of how much she must drink before going to bed. It is a challenge at times and I’ve been known to give her an incentive, such as she can’t play a game until she finishes her glass of water. Staying hydrated helps your body work to fight off infection.
Boost Your Immune System
Daily vitamins, probiotics, healthy diet and some orange juice can go a long way in promoting your health. A person who takes care of their body is less likely to get sick than someone will a poor immune system.
Be Prepared
So you were unfortunate to catch the nasty little bug going around… You feel it coming on but it is not severe enough to head to your doctor for antibiotics. Start with some over-the-counter medicine to help give yourself a kick start to fight off the infection before it gets worse.
Rest
Adequate sleep is imperative for your body to heal and rejuvenate. Go to bed early. Sleep in if possible. When you are down with a cold or the flu, take lots of naps. If I am sick and still have to work I use my laptop in bed and take multiple breaks to relax as much as possible. When the kids are sick that means unlimited TV time while they rest on the couch.
Being sick sucks. Being a mom with sick little ones is even worse. Being a mom that is sick while her little ones are sick can practically be unbearable!
Stay ahead of the cold and flu season or nip it as soon as it hits your family with the help of Walmart. The convenience of the one-stop shop for all your cold and flu needs can be a life saver. I remember the days of being a single mom and unable to get out of the house when my child was sick to pick up medicine. I’m so thankful for Walmart.com for the ability to have supplies delivered right to our door.
My husband and daughter both were rescued by DayQuil during their colds this year.
