These superhero cupcakes are specifically perfect for a Captain America party. They also double as great patriotic cupcakes for your 4th of July celebrations. But truly, any Avenger fan or superhero dessert loving person will enjoy these. They are easy to make!
We went beyond just making the multicolor icing, we layered the color of the cake batter as well. You can print the full recipe below with step-by-step instructions for at home use.
How to Make Multicolor Icing
You can give your cupcakes an extra level of awesomeness by adding a second or third frosting color. This looks fancy but is really easy to create.
First, you need to create your frosting colors. We did this by making a vanilla frosting and using gel food coloring. We mixed them in separate bowls until we got the desired color.
Once you have your frosting colors, you will squeeze a row of each color on a piece of plastic wrap. In this case for our superhero cupcakes, we used red, white and blue icing.
Roll your plastic wrap to hold the three layers of icing colors together. Place this in the refrigerator for a few minutes so it can thicken up. This will prevent it from blending too much and help you keep the depth of each frosting color.
Place your plastic wrap of frosting inside your piping bag with the end open to squeeze out your frosting. Make sure your cupcakes are completely cooled before decorating!
Using the star frosting tip, you can gently squeeze and move in a circular motion while adding icing to your cupcakes. Isn’t it beautiful? So easy and fun to create. They will be the star of your superhero party!

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a 12 count muffin tin with cupcake liners.
- Combine the 1/2 cup butter, 2 eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, baking powder, flour, and milk, mixing well.
- Divide the cupcake batter into 3 separate bowls. Add a few drops of red food coloring to one bowl and a few drops of blue food coloring in another bowl, mixing well.
- Scoop about 1 1/2 tbsp. of each colored batter into the cupcake liners in the following order: red, white and blue. *You don't want to overfill the cupcake liners.

- Remove from the oven and let cool completely prior to decorating.
Superhero Cupcakes Decorating
- Combine the powdered sugar, 1/3 cup softened butter, vanilla extract, and milk. Once the frosting has reached your desired consistency divide into 3 small dishes.
- Add 1 drop of red gel food coloring to one bowl of frosting and stir to combine. Repeat this step with the blue gel food coloring.
- Lay out a long piece of plastic wrap on the counter and a large baking sheet (you can always trim).
- Fill one freezer bag with one color of frosting. Snip the corner using the kitchen scissors and gently squeeze the frosting out in a long line on the plastic wrap.
- Repeat step previous step with the other 2 frosting colors.
- Once all the frosting is lined up, gently roll the plastic wrap. Place in the fridge a few minutes to firm up.
- Attach the star frosting tip to the disposable piping bag. Remove the frosting from the fridge. Cut in half if needed (mine was really long) and place the open end down into the frosting tip.
- Gently squeeze the frosting out of the bag and onto the cupcake in a circular motion.
- Repeat with all cupcakes.
