One of my favorite snacks is homemade pico de gallo.  I can add pico to just about any meal.  My husband makes a fresh batch every couple of days because it goes so quick in our home.  Farm Rich recently launched their Back Your Snack recipe contest which inspired me to share how we eat our crispy pickles and breaded mozzarella sticks…. with pico de gallo of course!

The Best Homemade Pico de Gallo

Have you ever tried the Farm Rich breaded mozzarella sticks or crispy dill pickles?  My teen loves the pickles.  They are easy and quick to make.  You just pop them in the oven for an appetizer – perfect for a party of when all the teens are gathering at one house.

While I was at Walmart picking up our Farm Rich snacks I ventured over to their produce section to get all the ingredients for our homemade pico.  I grabbed an avocado as well, because you can’t have pico without a side of guacamole.

Ingredients

  • 2 jalapenos (we remove about 85% of the seeds to reduce heat so it is kid-approved)
  • 4 small tomatoes
  • 2 large slices of the white onion
  • 4 full sprigs of cilantro
  • Garlic powder – to taste
  • Salt – to taste

How to Make Homemade Pico de Gallo

We use a hand operated food chopper to dice up all the ingredients to roughly the same size.  Before we put the produce into the food chopper we slice it down to size.

Chop Ingredients

My husband always guts the tomatoes so it is chunky pico without a lot of juice.  He also removes majority of the seeds from the jalapenos because the kids and I are wimps when it comes to extra spicy foods.  Both of these steps are merely personal preference.

Add Season to Pico

Once all the produce items are in the chopper we toss in garlic powder and salt.  We never use an exact measurement.  We just add per taste.  If you are hesitant always go with less until you taste it.  You can add more but too much salt can ruin the entire batch.

Chop Pico

I must admit I love our food chopper.  You just give it a few good turns and the pico de gallo is evenly chopped up.

Before removing the pico from the chopper make sure there is enough spice in your mixture.  Taste half a spoonful instead of dipping it onto a chip.  Chips usually have extra salt and can throw off your taste buds.  If you need more spice just add some to the mixture and stir it around or twist the chopper blades a few extra times.

I think the tasting phase is my husband’s favorite part.  He always needs to taste it more than once to get the salt and garlic just right.  I think it is just his excuse to continue eating the pico de gallo before anyone else snatches it up.

Now your pico de gallo is ready to serve!

You can dip or pile the pico on top of your mozzarella sticks.  The pickles taste really good with some spicy kick to them as well.  I eat mine with a fork so I can make sure nothing falls off.  The kids, however, like to dip all their foods.
