Feed Giraffes at Fort Worth Zoo
My first experience feeding giraffes was in Memphis. During a family trip to Tennessee, we got the chance to feed the giraffes at Memphis Zoo. It was amazing. So I was thrilled when the Fort Worth Zoo opened their new African Savanna area that offered guests the opportunity to hand feed the giraffes. For Mother’s Day, my family treated me to a trip to feed giraffes at Fort Worth Zoo.
I love spending time with my family. It is so hot in Texas during the summer months, but luckily the Fort Worth Zoo offers plenty of shaded areas to cool down. The new African Savanna area that opened at the end of April is a beautiful ten acres. We saw at least eight giraffes walking around in their habitat.
For $6 we were able to purchase a bundle of large lettuce leaves to feed the giraffes. Some were a little nervous to walk up to the platform while others were eager to grab the lettuce from you. Their tongues are so long!

The walk-up platform in front of the new giraffe exhibit at Fort Worth Zoo is long for plenty of guests to stand around. This gives you an opportunity to get an up-close view of the giraffes and capture great photos.
People would attempt to pet the giraffes but it is not recommended and they do not like it. They will pull their head away and the zookeepers tell you to stop, when they are paying attention.
My parents joined us on our trip to feed giraffes at Fort Worth Zoo and loved it. It was both of their first time feeding giraffes. Honestly, one bundle of lettuce was enough for each member of our family to feed the giraffes once or twice. But they eat it quickly and it goes fast, so we purchased two.
They are such beautiful animals. I have always been a huge fan of the large wild cats, especially white tigers. But now I am drawn to giraffes. I just love them.
Their newly opened habitat is beautiful. You can see the younger giraffes enjoying their time wandering through the exhibit. They ate leaves off the trees and there were large balls filled with hay hanging for them to enjoy. It was neat to see.
I highly recommend taking the time to visit the new African Savanna area at Fort Worth Zoo. You can also see the hippos through the underwater viewing area.
