Creativity is something that all of us possess.
It is, by definition, the ability to think in different, out of the box ways. Being a divergent thinker can help us come up with multiple solutions to everyday problems, and this is something we should truly be encouraging the children of today to further explore. Creativity helps fuel the ability in children to do things such as innovation and problem solving.
It is truly the hallmark of ingenuity, something which can assist children in gaining successes in the world of technology, science and arts. Furthermore, children who are spurred on to think creatively tend to exhibit higher self-esteem and motivation. Now, isn’t this exactly what you would love to instill in your children? If you don’t know where to begin in this journey, here are 5 fun projects that will help promote creativity in your kids.
- Fill Your Home With The Creative Tools They Will Need
Like anything else in life, in order to get your kids started on further developing their creativity, you will need to equip them with all the tools that they need. Purchasing items such as Paint, Craft Paper, a Glue Gun, Chalk, Fabric and so on will make sure that your children have everything they need to enrich their lives with.
Always take into consideration that when purchasing items such as Paint and Glue Guns, you will need to ensure that they are kid-friendly. Paints should be non toxic, and glue guns should be low temperature and non-toxic. It is always crucial to ensure that children are kept safe and away from any dangers in their creative environment.
2. Lead By Example
Children are very much like sponges – they absorb the things that happen in their environment and are highly influenced by authority figures such as parents or elder siblings. Always lead by example and be creative around your kids. Recent studies have shown that highly creative parents tend to produce highly creative one year old children – amazing!
So, how do you go actually go about being creative around your child?
It’s simple – you can both sing Karaoke in front of the TV, paint pictures of each other, or even use your bath towel as a cape and claim to be Superman/Superwoman who is coming to rescue them. Simple things go a long way, so don’t overthink it and you will excel in instilling that creative spark in your child.
3. Watch Magical & Creative Shows With Your Children
Doing something as simple as watching Harry Potter or Beauty And The Beast with your child is a sure-fire way of building their creativity. Fairy Tales, Disney Movies, Pixar Flicks and shows about magic are a great start. In fact, there has been a study which has found out that children were more creative days after watching a 15-minute video clip of Harry Potter.
Why stop at movies?
Introducing your children to magical books or ebooks are also a fantastic way to transport them to a land of fantasy, an environment in which their creativity will thrive the most.
4. Allow Your Children To Dress Themselves
Many parents fall into the trap of controlling or picking out everything their kids wear.
Whilst you may know that Red and Yellow may make your child like Ronald McDonald, who is to say that such a colour pairing is wrong? Adults tend to conform to society’s standards, which is a shame as it limits our own creative ways. When it comes to children who are fresh eyed and full of light, encouraging them to dress themselves in whichever way they want is a fantastic way to build their creativity and self confidence. Who knows, your kid could very well be the next Donatella Versace!
5. Get Busy In The Kitchen
Cooking doesn’t have to be all stress and headaches.
If you’re making cookies this weekend, why don’t you get your kids to mix the cookie dough with their (clean) fingers, or why not allow them to pick what they want for dinner tonight?
Encouraging children to be active in the kitchen and giving them tasks such as stirring batter or dolloping mixtures into muffin tins are not only fun activities, but learning ones. Giving your kids great feedback on how delicious their cookies were will help build their self confidence whilst teaching them essential life skills. So go ahead, bake a batch of cupcakes with the kids tonight.
We hope that you do indeed incorporate these 5 fun projects into your kids lives to further boost their creativity, life skills and imagination. Always remember that the children of today are the leaders and politicians of tomorrow, so ensuring that your children receive the best set of creative skills to help in their lifetimes is key to a bright future for them.
