Making the Most Of Small Spaces

It’s not easy living in a small property during this day and age. After all, our homes are much more than simply places to lay our heads at night. They’re where we entertain, where we curate who we are, and where to store all the things that one acquires as they go through life. Some properties, however, aren’t so ready and willing to naturally accommodate the needs of a modern home. In those cases, we don’t have to give up and let our homes become simply subject to the whim of the small space. We can do something about it. We can ensure we get the most out of the space that we do have. How? Why, by using a dash of creativity of course!

Buy Smart

When it comes to making the most of any space, the key is all in making sure we show a bit of intelligence when it comes to buying the essentials that we need in any home. Our furniture should have more than one use, for instance; take a look at Modern Digs and get a sofa that also functions as a bed; buy a coat hanger near your front door that also doubles up as a a bike rack; or get really innovate and have your full length mirror double up as ironing board. Hey presto, you’ve now got six uses from just three pieces of furniture!

Don’t Clutter

Your property is small, and this is good news. Why? Because you won’t be able to clutter up your property with useless junk – saving money in the process. Really, not buying too much is the key to making sure you always have enough space indoors. Before you buy anything, ask yourself if you really need it or if it’s really a worthwhile purpose. Not everything has to be functional, of course. A record player really might be an appropriate purchase; a life size model of Darth Vader probably isn’t (we’d like to hear the argument why this would be appropriate though!). In the end, your small space will become a virtue – you won’t be tempted to buy every single thing that you desire, which is better for your health of mind and the planet, too.

The Art of Deception

To own a small living space is to be a magician, because you’re going to magically make your property appear bigger than it really is. You’re going to fool yourself and others into thinking that tiny space isn’t so small after all. The most obvious well knock trick is to to paint your rooms with light colors; dark paint will absorb the light and make a small room look positively claustrophobic. If there’s a window, make sure it’s set up just right to let natural light in. If not, good use of lighting can make a room look bigger. Also, don’t be afraid to place a few well sized mirrors around the room – these can, for obvious reasons, also make any space look bigger than it actually is.

Hidden Fun

Nobody’s home should be solely about its functionality. You have to have some food stuff going on around your property – not doing so will make your small space feel less enjoyable to be in. The good news is that adding fun doesn’t have to take up too much – or any – of your precious space. For example, you could add a table that has an awesome secret lying just below the top service – a pool table! Draw back the top layer and you have hours of fun, right from nowhere. There are also doors that double up as a table tennis table – you just unclip the top and it swings down, ready for a table tennis session. You were creative with the space; we’re sure you can be equally creative when it comes to bringing the fun!

Tucking Everything Away

The last secret to making a small space appear bigger is to make sure it’s kept neat and tidy. For reasons we can’t explain, everything looking neat and order makes a room look bigger – not to mention also more pleasant to be in. That doesn’t mean your rooms have to be devoid of all objects, however. You just need to know what to do with them. Having light hanging shelves are a good space for books and photographs, for example. For everything else, clever storage will make sure things can be kept out of the way while also being easily accessible when they are needed: which is essentially what you’re trying to achieve!
