Verbier or Zermatt – How To Choose Between The Two

Everyone needs to get away for a while during the winter holidays. And, what better place to rejuvenate than the icy beauty of Switzerland? For decades, the country has held a special place in skiers’ hearts. Switzerland is quite famous during the cold months thanks to the extravagant ski resorts. However, the most famous places in Switzerland are Verbier and Zermatt.

While both of these resorts have their fair share of loyal advocates who come back year after year, many wonder (and sometimes debate) which is better; Verbier or Zermatt? Undoubtedly, both of these spots have a lot to offer – from luxury mountain chalet in Verbier to extraordinary backdrops in Zermatt. Of course, one could say both are superior in their ways, but if you need to choose between the two, then keep the following in mind:

Zermatt Ski Area

The Zermatt ski area covers more than 360km of pistes. The ski area is divided into four areas:

  • Sunnegga
  • Gornergrat
  • Klein Matterhorn
  • Schwarzsee

If one wishes to enter an extensive ski area known as the Matterhorn Ski Paradise, one must possess a Zermatt ski pass.

Zermatt Village

Zermatt Village, also known as the Zermatt Mountain Village, is a city in the district of Visp located in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The village serves as a municipality, and the ski resort of Zermatt is the central attraction spot. Furthermore, the ski resort is considered one of the best in the Swiss Alps.

Interestingly, the Zermatt ski resort was announced as one of the few car-free resorts in the world in 1961. At the same time, the village itself continues to provide a conventional, unique, and fascinating experience for visitors. In addition to this, to keep the traditional experience alive, around 30 ancient buildings stand erected surrounding the village. Also, the old village is centred around St Mauritius Church.

At its core, Zermatt offers stunning chalets, exceptional skiing, and an exhilarating nightlife scene for its tourists.

Verbier Ski Area

Verbier is found in the centre of Four Valleys. Four Valleys is considered one of the most significant ski areas in Europe. The skiing experience in Verbier is extraordinary for everyone due to the various ski areas:

  • Verbier Ski Area
  • Mont Fort Ski Area
  • Bruson Ski Area
  • Savoleyres and La Tzoumaz Ski Area
  • Mont Gele

Verbier Town

Verbier is a town located in the southwest of Switzerland. The most distinct aspect of Verbier is that there is an apparent absence of high-rise development. Although Verbier is considered a relatively expensive resort, it proves to be your money’s worth. All types of skiers can enjoy themselves here. From beginners to experts, there is something for everyone. Furthermore, Verbier offers luxury chalet accommodation. On the other hand, the town is relatively modern, so international and local businesses are scattered.

Verbier or Zermatt?

There are many things to mention about the resorts that depict how luxurious and unique they are and what they respectively offer. We can all agree that both have their perks but, the question remains; how do you choose between the two?

Well, essentially, it all comes down to your needs and preferences. If you want to spend all day on the slopes, then Verbier is your best bet. Although Zermatt has an arguably accessible ski area, it has fewer pistes than Verbier. Then, you have to factor in the weather. Since both resorts, Verbier and Zermatt, are located in the snowy Alps, you can expect to see a fair amount of snow. Keep in mind that typically Zermatt weather brings more snow. If you want to visit historical spots and delve into the traditional lifestyle of villagers, then Zermatt is a better option for you.
