The Vampire Diaries: Season 2 – Special Features

T and I found the Special Features on Disc 5 of The Vampire Diaries: Season 2 DVD set very intriguing.  It was interesting hearing all the actors/actresses talk about the show and their characters.  Two different Special Features particularly stood out for me, Her Own Worst Enemy… Elena, Katherine and Nina! and Pages of the Wolf: including 3 featurettes.  Watching these special features gave me a better appreciation for the characters and the show.

Hearing Nina talk about the struggles of playing two different characters in one show was enlightening.  I didn’t realize how I take for granted how much work goes into producing each one hour episode.  During the scenes where Katherine and Elena are talking to one another, Nina had to shoot the same scene playing opposite roles and basically talk to herself.  She also had to remember when her other character was being snarky or mean in order to play emotion into her response.  Can you imagine? I guess I never really gave it much thought until the special features clip showed the split screen and how it was edited together.  I can now say I appreciate Nina as an actress much more and she is one impressive chick!

Watching the making of the wolves was interesting.  Again, the scenes featuring Tyler Lockwood turning into a werewolf was taken for granted.  The amount of work and the number of people that took part in making those scenes come to life was beyond impressive.  Michael Trevino discusses his vulnerability when shooting the clip when he first changes into a werewolf.  After two days of filming he completely loses his voice from screaming to display pain.  He also used real chains in his scene instead of plastic ones in order to feel some of the pain his character is suffering from.  This aided him in his acting as a reminder that it wasn’t a pleasant experience.

The special feature shows how they made the special effects come to life and the difference between the computer generated wolf and the live wolves they filmed.  It was really cool to see how the software worked and watch the face of Tyler Lockwood changed into a face of a wolf.

I am so excited about Season 3 starting next week!  From now on when I watch the show I’ll recognize the actors/actresses hard work and pay closer attention to the special effects.  My appreciation has grown for The Vampire Diaries!
