Interview with Ron Luce, Creator of SURGE

My teen had the chance to attend a showing of the movie SURGE at our local theater and interview the creator, Ron Luce.  Post is written by my teen, They Call Me T.

Surge was a recording of Acquire The Fire conference teaching teens all around the world about God. It had several different Christan bands perform including Lecrae and Casting Crowns. At the beginning of the movie they came on and told us that we need to get out our phones and take a picture of the screen and post it to all social media websites. They also had us texting, talking to the people sitting next to us and standing up and singing. How many movies have you been to that allows you to use your phone the whole time?  The whole thing was really moving and it really got you connected with God. It was also pointed towards teens so it talked all about stuff that teenagers go through and how being connected to God is really important.

Did you ever imagine that you would be teaching teens about God when you where a teenager?

Well I found out about God as a teenager. When that happened I was so excited about God that I ran to school telling everyone what I had discovered. Even though I had no clue what I was talking about I just knew that it was so pure that I had to tell people about it.

What inspired you to turn Acquire The Fire into the movie Surge?

After over 20 years and 3 million teens, youth leaders wanted another way to reach out to even more teens at one time. And that is how Surge came to be.

How does it feel to know that you are leading millions of teens to God?

The biggest thing is to get teens interested in God and to get them to learn about God without all the churchy stuff that makes them want to turn away.

What was one obstacle you had to overcome throughout the process?

We had a LOT. The biggest challenge was to get Surge on the big screen and to get teens interested for more that 5 minutes.  [which was made possible by introducing social media and music throughout the film]

Have you had a mentor throughout the years or someone you looked up to?

I have had a lot of mentors some of them being on my board of directors and also my pastor.

Before I even got home from the movie I was begging my mom to purchase all the songs played on SURGE.  The soundtrack is amazing just as the show.

Full Disclosure: I received complementary tickets to see SURGE and was given the chance to interview Ron Luce from my own personal views.  I shared my experience with 100% truth.
