House Guests & You
There is something about having house guests that sends us all a little crazy.
On one hand, we’re delighted to see them. These are people we care about and want to spend time with, and we’re happy to open up our homes to them. We want them to feel at home and have as wonderful a time as possible.
On the other hand? Well, on the other hand we’re more than a little bit terrified. It’s one thing to occasionally have friends over for the evening, when you can bundle all the usual mess of the house into another room for the night. It’s quite another to have people staying with you, living in the house as if it’s their own.
When you have got guests coming to stay, it’s perhaps reassuring to know that we humans don’t differ that much really. There’s a few behaviors that we all have a tendency to indulge in as we get ready to be the hostess with the mostess – chances are, more than a few of these will sound familiar!
You Bust Out The Good Stuff
The towels that you and your family use are good, of course – you take care of them and try to keep them soft. But the towels that guests use? Oh, those are going to be so much better – soft, fluffy, luxurious to the point of overindulgence.
It’s the same with glassware, crockery, the knives and forks that you use. There’s one set for normal family usage and another for the other people. We all do it!
You See Your House Differently
The day before you agree to host guests, your house is just your house. You like it; maybe it could do with a bit of work, but you’re proud of it.
The day after you’ve agreed to host guests, your house is horrific and everything needs to change. How could you have let this happen? The air freshener is a nice touch, but it doesn’t detract from the fact you should be consulting the likes of Pagenstecher Group bathroom remodeling and giving the entire bathroom a makeover! As for the guest bedroom – how did you possibly think those pillows were acceptable?!
And on and on it continues; a sudden reevaluation of every area of your home. Most of the time it’s nonsense you can ignore, but it doesn’t stop our minds from running away with us from time to time!
“I’m So Excited” / “I Wish They Weren’t Coming”
Flipping back and forth between these two emotions is a mainstay for the vast majority of people who have guests coming to stay. One minute, we’re delighted at the prospect of playing host to people we genuinely care about. We can’t wait for them to get here! It’s going to be so good.
Then the next minute, we think of the stress of the preparation and suddenly we want to cancel everything. Luckily, this emotion goes out of the window the minute we see them, but it doesn’t make the countdown any easier!
