How to Host a School Spirit Party

Hosting a school spirit party is a lot of fun! Here in Texas it is tradition during the school’s homecoming game for girls to wear long homecoming mums to school that day and to the football game. The guys wear garter mums on their arms. The teens can buy these for one another or make their own. My daughter loves getting together with friends and assisting me with making her mum. With this year being her senior year we did things a little differently, to make it extra special.
Beyond homecoming mums, for a spirit party you can make spirit sticks, spirit wands with ribbons and bells, spirit flags and so much more.
The key is to gather as many spirit trinkets as possible.
From silver bells to felt letters, beads to mini football helmets – the craft options are endless.
I made our own pom-poms out of yarn. You can make these before the party and provide them for the kids to use to decorate their megaphones or have the teens make their own.
They are super easy to make by wrapping yarn around your fingers, then tying a piece around the center of your loops and cut the ends. You just fluff out the yarn to make a ball. There are several tutorials on Pinterest. I used gray and teal yarn wrapped together to make our poms.
We made our own spirit flag and my daughter is eager to hang it in her room.
The flag is made out of felt and the silver border is just ribbon with felt letters that say Senior 2016. Super easy!
To decorate the table I hung a flag banner.
DIY Flag Banner
Flag banners are popular party decor. However, I rarely find them in the stores in the colors that I need, so I decided to make my own.
Items Needed:
- Cardboard Box
- Scrapbook Paper
- Hot Glue Gun
- Jute (or string/yarn of choice)
- Glue Stick
Since our spirit party was themed silver and white with teal accents I purchased scrapbook paper in coordinating colors. We had a cardboard shoe box left over from back-to-school shoe shopping that my husband was able to cut me six triangles out of. Once you decide on the size of your banner, measure out one triangle and use it as a template for the other triangles to be the same size.
I traced the cardboard triangles on the back of my scrapbook paper to cut out the front of my banner. When adding the scrapbook paper triangles to the cardboard I used a glue stick so it was thin glue and didn’t show through the paper like typical bottle glue would do. This way there were no glue lumps in the banner. A bonus of using a glue stick is the paper holds to the cardboard so it won’t come apart, yet I can peel it off and reuse the cardboard triangles for a future banner if I want.
Once the triangle flags were finished, I glued the jute to the back of each one with my hot glue gun. The glue dries pretty instantly, so not much wait time afterwards.
Now it was ready to hang!
While shopping for party supplies at Walmart I had to grab snacks. Since making mums is usually an after school activity, the kids are always ready for a snack the moment they walk in the door.
Our go-to treats for after school snacks are the Go-Paks! My kids request Snack Pack pudding cups too. The best part about these snacks are they are only $1 each. You can’t beat that when providing snacks for multiple kids, especially teenagers that can throw back some food.
We also use these Go-Paks! for snacks to take with us to soccer.
You can’t have a spirit party without spirit snacks.
I love patterned scrapbook paper, can’t you tell? I found this cute Go Team! Spirit patterned paper for only $0.40 a sheet that was easy to cut and wrap around the Go-Paks! Decorating the party treats is another easy way to keep with the theme and get the kids excited about being back in school.
10 Second Dirt Pudding
This double-chocolate-crunch deliciousness is easy to make in ten seconds or less. What’s great about the Go-Paks! is they come with a reusable lid that does not leak, so you can take your snacks on the go. The sturdy plastic cups allow for mixing of ingredients right inside the cup.
Pour your chocolate Snack Pack pudding cup into the mini OREO Go Paks! and use your spoon to crunch them together. Top it off with some Reddi-wip and …ta-da... you have dirt pudding.
Homecoming was a success and they had a great time. Now the mum is hanging on her bedroom wall to showcase memories and school spirit for her senior year.
