Who Said Gabby Had Enough Specialists?

Yesterday morning I received a call from Gabby’s NeuroSurgeon asking me how her knot was doing.  I had been taking photos of it since our appointment a week ago to email to him.  The knot was getting worse over the week and the redness in the center was larger.  I called the NeuroSurgeon last Friday and left a message saying I was concerned.  He asked me to take a current photo of the knot yesterday and email to him, which I did.  He immediately responded saying I was correct, it was definitely worse and he had called another specialist to see her.  An infectious disease specialist.  Her NeuroSurgeon believed there was a chance it was staph.  Lovely, right?

I took Gabby in to see her new specialist at 2:00 PM.  This makes eight specialists now not to mention the pediatrician, therapists and dentist but who’s counting…

We discussed how long she has had the knot and how her MRI from 2007 actually shows the knot under the skin next to the skull.  The Infectious Disease Specialist said it was uncommon for a staph infection to progress so slowly and for her to have a knot since last October with no redness or soreness at all until two weeks ago.  He said staph usually progresses a lot faster and becomes more severe with neck stiffness and headaches, which Gabby has not had.  However he did say he thought it was some kind of infection, possibly an infection of the bone.  *Sigh*

The doctor decided he wanted to take two cultures, meaning he needed to drain it.  What a freaking nightmare.  He gave Gabby several shots under the knot and in the knot to numb it, which of course hurt!  She was so scared and upset.  Then he took his scalpel and sliced it open in the center.  He drained quite a bit out of it and cleaned it up.  She cried pretty hard from the pain.  It was awful.  I hate holding her down for these kind of procedures.

We should get the results within the week and we return to see him again next Monday.  As of right now she isn’t allowed to swim so we had to cancel our plans to visit a waterpark this week.  She wasn’t happy about that.

I’m just ready for answers….
