Since June was Get Outdoors Month and July 14th is Macaroni and Cheese Day, we decided to celebrate by venturing outside to make a DIY Nature Garden Pot for Kids while having a picnic.
Check out how we got creative with the Back to Nature Macaroni and Cheese that we found at Target.
DIY Nature Garden Pot Supplies
- Clay Flower Pot – optional: painted
- Succulents
- Back to Nature Mac & Cheese (we used the crazy bugs shape)
- Toothpicks
- Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
- Extra Soil
We let the kids paint their clay pots before we started planting. The pots dried quickly, so there was hardly any wait time. You can gather your soil while waiting for the paint to dry.
Planting the succulents was the fun part. The kids were able to push down the soil and get their hands dirty. We decided to plant succulents instead of seeds so the kids could enjoy seeing their garden immediately. Plus, succulents are easier for kids to help keep alive than most flowers.
We dampened the soil to help it loosen up and to make it easier to push down. As they were settled into the pot, we added more soil around the edges.
We opened the box of Back to Nature Mac & Cheese and poured into a bowl for the kids to pick through. They selected which bugs they wanted to include in their Nature Garden Pot. The fun shapes of the macaroni really made their tiny garden come to life.
I added a small dab of hot glue on the end of a toothpick to hold the pasta in place.
Since hot glue dries instantly, the little bugs held right into place.
Now they had their garden friends to add.
Each of them placed their own crazy bugs in their garden pot. They featured a beetle, dragonfly and caterpillar. So cute!

After they finished their summer kid craft, we had a picnic outside.
While shopping at Target, we picked up Back to Nature Made With Organic Pasta Macaroni & Cheese Dinner along with the Made with Organic Pasta Crazy Bugs. For this box of macaroni and cheese – we actually ate it instead of played.
After cooking the mac and cheese, we set up a lunch picnic outside.
To stay with our back to nature theme – we used grass patterned scrapbook paper as our placemats.
