Chapter Book Series to Read Aloud to your Son

Noah has struggled with reading but one great way to encourage him has been reading chapter books together. We take turns reading each chapter or he reads a book that is on his reading level and I read a different story at bedtime.  Although many parents do this when their children are younger, they forget to continue reading to their children as they grow up. Even if your child is able to read on his own, listening to an adult read a book aloud allows him to hear a story being read fluently, exposing him to vocabulary and sentence patterns that are more difficult to read and understand.

Here are a few chapter book series that you can get started reading aloud right away.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

If your son enjoys comedy, then this chapter book series is for you. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a chapter book series that chronicles the life of Greg, the main character, as he navigates the notoriously difficult years of middle school. Not only will your son love the humor presented in this book, he’ll also be able to identify with the trials that Greg goes through as he gets older.  My oldest daughter even loved the series.

I Survived

Do you want to expose your son to important events from history? Then you’ll love reading the I Survived series aloud to your son. Although this series is fictional, it does a great job of accurately depicting a historical event, told by a boy who survives the ordeal. This book series allows you and your son to be transported to the event as you learn about what it was like during that time period.

Brian’s Saga

Starting with the book Hatchet, Brian’s Saga is a chapter book series that follows a boy as he struggles to survive in the wilderness. Your son will love listening to the story as Brian uses his instincts to stay alive after he’s left stranded in the wilderness upon surviving a plane crash. You can also use this book series as a conversation starter with your son, discussing what he would do if he were in the same situation.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians

Another great chapter book series to read aloud to your son is Percy Jackson & the Olympians. This series includes five novels that follow Percy Jackson as he’s introduced to a world filled with demigods from Greek mythology. After reading this book series aloud to your son, you can extend the fun by watching the versions of the first two books.  This series was another of my teen’s favorite when she was younger and we even own the movies.

There are many benefits associated with reading aloud to your son. What are your favorite books to read aloud to your little one?
