Burning Santa Letters Is Magic

|

Two years ago we watched the Christmas movie Santa Who as a family.  At the beginning of the movie you see the letter to Santa of an orphan boy get tossed into a fire and burned.  At first my reaction was to gasp considering the little boy secretly saw this happen and stopped believing in Santa.  Little did he know this was one of the fastest ways to get your letter straight into the hands of Santa through magic.

As the letter burns the smoke carries the ashes up through the chimney and Santa collects them to magically put the letter together.  Apparently it is a tradition for some and the way Santa letters are ‘sent off’.  My kids loved the idea and developed it as our own tradition.

While writing their Santa letters this past weekend to send up in smoke I looked back on old photos and found a cute video of Noah explaining what he was doing – {with a little help from me}.

It makes me smile to see him so little and also somewhat sad to realize how much he has grown. However, how cute is this letter to Santa written by him in kindergarten without my help?

He has come a long way in two years.  His letter this past weekend to Santa read:

I love how he included his spelling test grades in his letter.  I am so proud of that accomplishment this school year seeing as how he has made almost straight 100’s every week.  There was only one week that he missed two words causing him to get an 82 but 100 or 102 with the two challenge words is usually his score.  Which is drastic progress from last year when he struggled.

Gabby and Noah enjoyed writing their Santa letters and placing them in the fire to watch them burn.  I think it is the highlight of their season.

Do your children write letters to Santa?  Do you mail your letters, hang them in the stockings or burn them? What is your favorite Christmas family tradition?

  1. My kids write their letters and put them in the mailbox at the “home of Christmas spirit” that we go to every year. Then after Christmas they get a letter back from Santa and Mrs Claus in the mail. Super cute, a local couple does this every year. We also donate all of our change in their donation bucket every year to help with the costs of their free event.

    1. I love that your community does that for the kids. How awesome would it be to receive a letter back from Mrs. and Mr. Santa Claus! Some years I order the kids letters from Santa from various websites but they aren’t always custom to their original letters written.

  2. That’s what I love about these letters, they actually are a local couple who takes the time to reply to each letter and they mention something from each kids original letter. It’s so magical and sometimes I think that would be a cool family to be a part of 😉 the whole family dresses up for their home of Christmas spirit – elves, one year the grinch, always mrs and me claus, it’s just so heart warming.

  3. I started this tradition with my children i have tried for Yeats to try to the movie again I thought I had when I read your post and said it was “Santa who” but that’s movie about a Santa that can’t remember. Do know the name of the movie?
