Did you take the family to see Disney Pixar Incredibles 2 this weekend? Baby Jack Jack stole the show! At the end of The Incredibles, 14 years ago, we got a sneak peek into Jack Jack’s powers. When he was taken by Syndrome – Buddy, we saw his powers kick in for self-defense. Jack Jack turned into steel – making him heavy for Syndrome to fly with, he went into flames, and he turned into a tiny monster. Unfortunately, the rest of the Parr family was down on the ground and didn’t see Jack Jack’s display of powers.
Powers of Jack Jack
If you haven’t seen The Incredibles in 14 years then I highly recommend watching it again before heading to the theaters to see Incredibles 2. You can still enjoy the second film, either way, but it helps as a refresher to see Jack Jack and understand the family dynamic. Plus, Incredibles 2 picks up at the same scene The Incredibles left off. There is no time lapse so we get to see the Parr family find out that Jack Jack has powers. This provides quite a bit of comedy to the film.
Development of Jack Jack’s Powers
Thanks to Disney Pixar Animation Studios, I was able to attend a media event in San Francisco last month to hear about the making of Incredibles 2. One of the conferences we sat in on discussed all things Jack Jack. Seeing what goes into creating these animated powers was beyond impressive. As you can see in the below trailer for Incredibles 2, Jack Jack develops a power where he turns to goo. The animation team said this was probably one of the toughest powers to create.
Animation has come a long way over the past 14 years, which gave the Pixar team the ability to make extremely realistic fire. Another challenge they faced was turning Jack Jack into a ball of flames. They wanted to avoid making him look too scary or like a demon. They created several layers of animation to make him show as if he was projecting the flames away from his body instead of appearing like he was burning himself.
The animation team spent countless hours working to perfect Jack Jack’s powers. They did a fabulous job and he truly steals the show. I never thought about the level of work involved in making an animation film come to life so beautifully. No other team could have done a better job than Pixar did.
You’ll be amazed by all of Jack Jack’s powers, which there are over a dozen! Try to count them while you watch Incredibles 2 in theaters. Besides these impressive and fun powers, you get to see the comedy behind the family realizing Jack Jack is a super and not an ordinary baby. Bob Parr fluctuates between being impressed and excited his baby has powers to exhausted and concerned on how to teach him to control them.
Edna Mode steps in to help out, I share more about that in my spoiler-free movie review.
