Hermione is not just my daughter’s cat, she is family. Since we have big dogs in the house, Hermione stays in my daughter’s room. With her living in a smaller space it is important that she is able to keep it as odor-free as possible. That’s why the Litter Genie® Cat Litter Disposal System comes in handy. When it comes time to clean, we use the below all natural litter box cleaner recipe.
While shopping at Target to pick up my supplies for the homemade cleaner, I was able to pick up the Litter Genie® Pail.
The Litter Genie® Cat Litter Disposal System comes with one package of bags to fill. A single Litter Genie® Pail refill contains 7 bags holding about 14 days of litter each (in a single cat home). That means it’ll be a while before I have to purchase a refill.
When we got home we quickly setup the The Litter Genie® Cat Litter Disposal System. Each refill carton comes with instructions and a photo showing you step-by-step how to install. It’s very simple. You pull the first bag out and tie a knot at the end.
The refill locks into place and you push the first bag through the hole, down into the Litter Genie® Pail.
The mess free locking system helps eliminate odors even in a small space. The Litter Genie® Pail can be easily stored under a cabinet, in a closet or tucked away in the corner of a bathroom.
You can scoop away odor in just three easy steps: scoop clumps from your litter box, open lid, and pull out handle to dump. It locks away the clumps of litter so you don’t have to mess with it until trash day.
When your first bag is full, the Litter Genie® Pail has a built in cutting system to cut the bags for you so that all you have to do is tie them and discard.
Since your feline is part of your family it is important to know what chemicals are in the cleaners you use. So many ingredients are toxic to cats. That’s why we make our own homemade non-toxic cleaning solution for wiping down the litter box scoop and cleaning the bottom each week after the full dump.
All Natural Litter Box Cleaner Ingredients
- Glass Spray Bottle
- 4 Tablespoons of White Vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon of Dawn Soap
- 2 teaspoons of Baking Powder
- 3 cups of Warm Water
Start by adding one cup of your warm water in the glass bottle. Make sure you are mixing your ingredients over a sink or have plenty of paper towels ready, it is possible to overflow or spill.
Slowly add your baking powder and soap into your glass bottle.
Make sure you let the baking powder dissolve into the water before you add the vinegar to prevent it from foaming up and overflowing. It took about five minutes to dissolve for me. Do not aggressively shake the cleaner, this will cause it to foam. Once the baking powder has dissolved, slowly pour in your white vinegar. Finally, add the remaining two cups of warm water and roll your glass bottle around to mix well.

Can I use a plastic bottle rather than a glass one?
I prefer glass but plastic should work just fine.
I have seen many DIY cleaning recipes using baking soda, but never baking powder. I just want to double-check that you really used baking powder in this recipe. Is that correct?
Yes, here is another article that has more great options for using baking powder. It helps double as an air freshener for your litter box.
