Choose You: American Cancer Society – Giveaway

According to the American Cancer Society, about half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people maintained a healthy weight through diet and regular exercise; avoided tobacco products; and got recommended cancer screening tests. As a busy mom I know, it’s not always easy to incorporate these healthy behaviors into a busy lifestyle! In fact, a new national survey of approximately 2,000 women ages 25-64 revealed that they are so busy being caretakers of others, they have little time to take care of their own health.

Actress Ellen Pompeo, star of “Grey’s Anatomy”, kicked-off the American Cancer Society’s Choose You initiative on May 4th at an event in Times Square, along with national presenting sponsors Sprite Zero and Walgreens. Pompeo “powered up” the Choose You flower icon on the world’s largest digital sign, the Walgreens Times Square Billboard. The event marked the start of the nationwide effort to encourage women across the country to do something they almost never do – to “choose themselves first” so they can stay well and reduce their risk of cancer.

Findings from the American Cancer Society’s 2010 Choose You Survey

In March 2010, the American Cancer Society conducted a national online survey of approximately 2,000 U.S. females ages 25-64 to examine women’s health behaviors and needs. According to the survey, women want better health, but fall short of achieving it. The survey found that 95% of women feel the need to improve their health, yet approximately three out of five women put others’ health before their own. When it comes to women’s specific health behaviors, the survey reveals some eye-opening findings:
·         90% say they fall short of eating a healthy diet
·         85% don’t get the minimum 30 minutes a day of exercise, 5 days a week recommended by the U.S. government
·         76% don’t always protect their skin from the sun

  2. I come from a family of smokers. My stepfather was on oxygen and still smoked(Cancer took 1/2 lobe of his lung before taking his life). I chose not to smoke. I walk 3-5 times a week and am teaching my kids that walking is healthy. We walk the mile and a half it takes to go to the movies or mall. I read nutritional information and am teaching my kids the same. I keep fresh fruits and veggies in our house. I’m a foodie so its important to have healthy food choices available. I drink plenty of water and try to add lemon. I limit my caffeine intake. I inherited kidney stones so hydration is important. Tea is a NO NO FOR ME(TANNIC ACID) but lemons actually improve my shot at health.

  13. I am a mom, stepmom, wife, and caregiver. I know that when I don’t take care of myself, I am in no shape to care for anyone else. I set aside one hour of “me” time a day. I exercise, read a book, take a bubble bath, or just watch a mindless sitcom… whatever I want. Sounds simple, but REALLY makes a difference in my day!

  14. I try to get some exercise every day! I walk every day that the weather permits with my dog.

  15. I “Choose Me” by making sure I get in 10,000 steps of walking (about 5 miles worth) on most days. I’ve noticed that I’m looking smaller, my clothes are fitting better, and I’m feeling happier from spending all that time outdoors!

I finally met with an endocrinologist in March & that man has changed my life. I’m feeling better, and in turn – I’m working on myself. I’ve started taking vitamins daily, and I feel good enough to start working out! That is a huge change for me! And a good one.

  24. I am making sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid sodas and coffees and other beverages!

  25. I ‘choose me’ by praying and reading the bible early in the morning before everyone gets up. It revitalizes me and gives me the energy to get through the really tough days. I used to be extremely irritable and yelled a lot at my family. Now I am much more calm and able to focus on the main issues at hand. It has changed me for the better in so many ways, including my health, and I continue to grow in His word.
