Mom’s First Easter Basket
My mom came from a family of 8 growing up on many acres, working in the farm, her mother handmade all their clothes and her father raised cattle. Needless to say they didn’t ever have much as kids. This year we were talking about my kids’ Easter basket and how she never had one growing up. I shouldn’t have been surprised but I guess I had never truly thought about it.
I knew right then and there that this was going to be her first year to receive one. However my mom is somewhat like me in the area that we don’t eat many sweets so I was pretty dang clueless as to what to put inside an adult Easter basket. I racked my brain, asked on twitter and then went out shopping for gifts.
While the kids and I were on Spring Break in Tennessee we went through all the shops in Gatlinburg. One of the shops was a specialty shop that sold all sorts of items including some gag gifts. Of course T picked something out for her Nana, so that went in the basket right away. I had already given my mom the new bird feeder when we got back in town to show our appreciation for dog sitting, so this wasn’t an easy task. I knew my parents enjoy going to the movies on a regular basis to see all the new releases at the theater. I thought a great idea would be to put a gift card to our local Rave Motion Pictures in the basket. Although my parents don’t drink much I thought it would also be nice to put a simple bottle of wine in the basket. A nice treat that they may open at some point to share. My mom also collects all the Disney movies and I knew she had purchased Princess and the Frog for Gabby’s birthday but she hadn’t gotten herself a copy yet. I threw in that DVD as well. Finished it off with a few plastic eggs filled with candy, some facial care products and lotions.
Giving my mom that Easter basket on Sunday was priceless. She was surprised and thrilled. You could tell she was touched and it brought tears to my eyes. My kids especially enjoyed it, they signed a special Nana Easter card for her.

What a thoughtful thing to do when so much of the emphasis of Easter is on the kids! I’m sure she loved it. I don’t think I’d ever have thought to do that!
