Dollar Store DIY: Craft Ribbon Pumpkin
You know how much I love crafting! Updating simple Dollar Tree finds to look like they came from a home decor store is my favorite. Remember those bright orange pumpkins I found at the dollar store and turned into a pumpkin candleholder? Here is another way to decorate those styrofoam pumpkins and add some fall decor to your home.
Dollar Store DIY: Craft Ribbon Pumpkin
Supplies:
- Dollar Tree Orange Styrofoam Pumpkin
- Ribbon or Strips of Fabric
- Mod Podge
- Sponge or paint brush
- Jute
- Scissors
Craft Ribbon Pumpkin
You can use supplies from your craft bin or pick up ribbon while grabbing your pumpkins at Dollar Tree. Another great place to shop for the ribbon is on the clearance aisle at your local craft store or even Walmart. You can also use scraps of fabric you have left over from a previous craft.
Cut the wide ribbon or gather strips of fabric. You will measure your ribbon to start at the bottom of your pumpkin and go up the side to lay near the stem. On the bottom of your pumpkin, you will slightly overlap the pieces of ribbon so allow enough length to go past the middle mark.
Mod Podge is my jam! We put together a lot of puzzles in our house and we always glue them together by adding Mod Podge to the back. So I keep this stuff in stock in my craft supplies. Don’t get scared when you see it go on white like glue, it dries clear!
This craft can get a little messy but Mod Podge washes off easily.
Dip the sponge applicator into the Mod Podge and apply directly to the pumpkin, then add some Mod Podge to the back of your ribbon. Place one strip at a time, adding more Mod Podge as you go.
Once all ribbons or fabric strips have been applied and your pumpkin is covered, let it sit to dry. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect yet.
Jute is another staple in my home. I used it a lot last Christmas while covering old glass bottles to decorate for gifts.
Once your ribbon is dry, it’s time to finish off your stem and hide those ugly edges.
You are going to wrap the jute around the stem but first, apply some Mod Podge to the stem and directly to your jute. Keep pressing the jute down as you wrap it tightly around the styrofoam stem.
Cut the jute once you’ve reached the top of your stem. Add another dab of Mod Podge and push the end of your jute down to hide the rough edge.
Once your Craft Ribbon Pumpkin is dry, press and smooth out for a nice finish.
Isn’t this pumpkin adorable? I love the gold and black ribbon, but feel free to use any color scheme that matches your home decor. It looks cute sitting on your coffee table or countertop.

Very elegant! Our Dollar Trees in Canada don’t seem to be as well stocked as their American counterparts so I don’t know if these would be available here. But the project overall has given me some ideas; thanks!
