Create a greeting card
Whether or not your child lives near their grandparents, they can always send snail mail. Break out the scrap booking supplies — construction paper, ribbon, markers, and glue — to help your child create a one-of-a-kind card that grandma and grandpa will love way more than Hallmark. Grandparents Day card ideas can include poetry, pictures or favorite memories.
Plant it
Many grandmas and grandpas love to garden. Grab a plain terracotta pot from your local store and help kids paint it. You can use acrylic paint or markers to write a message, create a pattern or even add a handprint. Don’t forget to add the year!
Frame it!
A picture says 1,000 words, and a personalized frame can say a million. There are many different ways to tackle this project. Help your child make a frame with popsicle sticks and glue, or decorate a pre-made frame bought from the store. Bonus points if you have your child write a loving note on the back of the frame, adding another layer of memories to this project.
Craft a poem
Do you have a young Hemingway on your hands? Help them write a poem or short story for their grandparent. You can prompt them with questions such as, “What’s your favorite thing about grandma?” or “How does someone become a grandpa?”
Save the space
Bookmarks are a quick, easy project, but kids will love making these. Cut construction paper into strips and allow kids to use markers, glitter, ribbons or stickers to decorate. Encourage them to draw pictures of their favorite memories with their grandparents or a beautiful design. When they’re finished, punch a hole in the top, add a ribbon and laminate the page.
Make an award
This is a great project for younger students. Attach two slips of blue paper to the bottom of a paper plate to emulate a blue ribbon. Ask your child what award grandma or grandpa should receive. “Best Grandpa” is obvious, but what about “Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Baker” or “Best Car Repairman.” Add the title, and then let your child decorate the paper plate.
Bake a mug
Here’s an easy project that will last for years. Grab a white mug from a dollar store, and have kids decorate it with permanent markers. Then, bake the mug in the oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes to solidify the color. It will need time to cool when it comes out, so parental assistance is necessary for this one!
Paint a picture
Not all the gifts need to be Grandparent Day-themed. Many grandparents would just enjoy some thoughtful art. Grab a paintbrush and some colors, and have your child paint whatever they want. You can also help them find ideas online by searching for famous landscape photography or gain inspiration by going for a walk around the neighborhood.
Use your feet or your hands!
For young kids who are constantly growing, capture their tiny size with footprints or handprints. You can make all sorts of shapes using prints — butterflies, flowers, suns and more! Get creative, and encourage your little ones to try to find new ideas as well.
