DreamWorks HOME – All around beautiful film
My family attended a screening of the movie HOME compliments of DreamWorks Animation to conduct this review.
Just when I thought a 3D animated film could not get any better, DreamWorks goes and does it again. They really outdid themselves with this movie. HOME was spectacular in the graphics department. The three-dimensional aspect was seriously stunning. I recommend seeing it in one of the XD theaters if you get a chance, you’ll feel as if you are right in the center of the action.
HOME introduces you to the world of Boov. Boov are little alien creatures that are just adorable and purple! Who doesn’t love purple? Although they are aliens they are unlike the typical cliche. They are not dangerous or mean. They do invade Earth but only because they are looking for a safe place to hide from their enemies. Instead of killing off the human race, they relocate them elsewhere. The ironic part of the aliens in this movie is they are actually more afraid of things around them, including humans, than we are afraid of them.
Oh, played by Jim Parsons, really reminds me of his character in Big Bang Theory. I think DreamWorks did an excellent job at casting. Oh is a genius yet clueless when it comes to interactions with others or common sense. Throughout the movie he learns what feelings are and how to care for someone else. He also starts to understand the human mind and the appropriate way to treat others. The cute thing about seeing the Boov go through emotions is they change colors each time. I love it!

Tip, played by Rihanna, gets separated from her mother during the Boov invasion. As they relocate the humans to their ‘new‘ part of the world Tip is able to hide out and avoid being captured. This scene really tugs on the motherhood heart strings. The emotions displayed of sadness and fear from Tip and her mother, played by Jennifer Lopez, is moving. I was slightly emotional throughout several scenes in the movie. Which surprised me for an animated film.
On her journey to find her mother, Tip runs into Oh and they build a bond that is unbreakable. It shows the trials of any new friendship. From doubt and lack of trust in the beginning to happiness, adventure, learning to lean on one another, sharing new memories and even disappointment and heartache. In the end they both realize what is most important and that not all family is the same species.
The movie is filled with elaborate colors and images. There is lots of quirkiness and many laughs will be had. While watching the movie I felt like the little Boov in the above video, going through emotions with the characters. Tip tries to display courage and determination while still being a young girl and scared. There is quite a bit of depth to the characters, beyond the typical cartoon.
It was so good that even my husband is saying he would really enjoy seeing it again and does not want to wait for the DVD release, we may even head to the theaters again this weekend. It is a family flick that we will be sure to own at home.
