A white birthday

It is rare for us to have much snow in Texas.  It seems each year we get nasty weather resulting in ice and sleet.  The roads will be iced over for a couple of days and the kids get to stay home from school.  That was Monday and Tuesday of this week.  We had lots of sleet and the kids wanted so badly to go outside and play in it or build a snowman.  My 8-year-old came in from outside and said “mom, that snow really hurts when it falls on your head” – which I then had to explain how it wasn’t snow, it was sleet, even though it looked a little white on the ground in places.

Finally the weather warmed up just enough above freezing to melt the ice and allow the kids to return to school on Wednesday.  Which, surprisingly, happened to be the first day this winter we received snow.

This is the first day in my lifetime to have a white birthday.  I even tweeted our local weatherman to ask him when was the last time it snowed on February 25th in DFW and he said we received 3 inches of snow in 1949.  Which was a little before my time.  Although we have even got snow as late as April back in 2007, this was the first birthday I got to wake up and see pretty white snow on my lawn.

Andrew surprised me with a new chair for my office.  My old chair was starting to really hurt my legs and I desperately needed a new one.  I love my new comfy desk chair.  The color goes well with my office decor!

I experienced the best of both worlds on Wednesday.  I enjoyed the view of the falling snow that morning from my office and then the sun was out by lunchtime.  So when I went out to eat with Andrew it was a beautiful day out and the snow was completely gone.

How do you make the best of an ice/snow day?  Thank goodness for comfortable furniture, board games, food in the pantry and lots of movies to watch.  We were one of the lucky ones that did not lose power in our area.
