Free College Planning Workshop in Fort Worth

I want to extend an invite to all of my local Dallas/Fort Worth readers to join me for a free college planning workshop. While I’m still dealing with the shock that my daughter is already 16, I know that it’s time to start planning her future. This past year, her first year in high school, she did a lot of research on colleges. One of her class assignments was to research various colleges that offer the classes and majors that she wants to focus on and to learn as much information about attending their school as possible. Although that assignment was great for the students I think at times it’s better to get professional help.

When I was invited to attend one of the local college planning workshops to learn more information I was eager to share the news with my teen student. Planning for college is an important step in my daughter’s future and it can also be very scary. That’s why I’m looking forward to attending the next free workshop in our area.

Ducerus provides free workshops for parents and their teens throughout Tarrant County. The events are free but registration is required. The events provide detailed information about the importance of college planning and the challenges facing families today. Many families are surprised to learn the following:

• A four year degree at a state school costs, on average, $100,000.

• Families who make $100,000 a year may still qualify for financial aid.

• Private schools can be just as affordable, or in some cases even less expensive, than state schools.

• Students should apply to 6-10 schools and alphabetize the list on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) form. This let’s schools know you’re shopping around.

• Standardized tests are critical. Schools use them for admissions and for merit aid.

• Families should begin developing a plan when their student is a freshman in high school.
