5 Ways to Create a Low Maintenance Garden

There are times when health or work commitments mean you don’t have the time to look after your garden. Instead of wishing you lived in a flat, or had the money to hire a gardener, you can spend a little bit of money and save time in the long term. Here are five options to think about.

Create an Alpine Rockery

It might seem like hard work at first, but building an alpine rock garden needn’t be a chore. If you have a clear patch of garden with no overhanging trees or shrubs then this would be ideal for a rockery. After clearing the turf away, it’s just a case of building it up with rubble or old bricks, laying the old turf upside down over the rubble and adding some topsoil. Into this you just need to set some nice, well placed lumps of rock with space in-between for your alpine shrubs. Then it’s just a case of covering the bare soil with pea gravel or shingle.

Alpines are pretty hardy little shrubs that take little looking after, so they will be ideal plants for a low maintenance garden. The gravel and rocks provide little space for weeds to take hold, so they can be easily dealt with if they do appear.

Build a Raised Flowerbed

A raised flowerbed will still need some maintenance, but it will make life a lot easier not having to stoop down so far. A lot of the chore in gardening is having to crawl on your hands and knees in order to plant or weed. Having a raised bed alleviates this. These are also ideal for low mobility and wheelchair users.

Install a Patio

Getting rid of the garden altogether could be the perfect answer as patios don’t need weeding or watering. A patio will give you a lovely space to eat out in sunny weather, which is ideal if you like entertaining. If you do want to do some planting, then tubs of various sizes and shapes enable you to have greenery, which can be moved around and changed as needs dictate.

Introducing Egg Cartons

Looking for an eco-friendly and cost-effective gardening solution? Consider utilizing egg cartons! These versatile containers can be repurposed to start seeds indoors, offering a convenient and sustainable way to kickstart your garden. Fill each section with soil, sow your seeds, and watch your plants thrive. Embrace the practicality of egg cartons and take the first step towards creating a low-maintenance garden today!

Lay Artificial Grass

You may like a lovely lawn, but just don’t have the time to cut, water and weed it. Lawns need to be looked after in order to look nice. A badly kept lawn will look scruffy, patchy or overgrown. One solution to this is to use an artificial grass such as Grono. Artificial grass in Cabazon, CA, is usually cheaper than laying a patio, but it still gives you a great place for the kids to play.

Use an Automatic Watering System

If you don’t have time to keep on top of your garden, then you might want to consider a good automatic watering system, such as sprinklers or drip lines. These can be set to come on at certain times of the day so at least you don’t have to take time to do it yourself. These systems are also ideal if you are away a lot.

Gardening needn’t be high maintenance; with a little planning you can still have a lovely garden but with a lot less work.
