Homemade Bath Salts for Valentine’s Day

For Valentine’s Day the kids and I made some bath salts to give as gifts.  Since the kids have Valentine’s Day parties at school we thought these would make great teacher gifts.  What teacher doesn’t need a relaxing bath after wrangling a bunch of kids all day?

Supplies for Homemade Bath Salts

I found the glass container with the wooden lid and spoon at Hobby Lobby and the other two glass containers shown in the photo at Target in their Dollar Spot section.  My teenager loved the vintage milk jug and wanted to make that one for her friend.  Since it’s Valentine’s Day we went with red spray paint for the wooden finish.

I applied two coats of red paint that I purchased at Walmart.  I waited about 30 minutes between coats of paint.  Since the wooden spoon is used to scoop out bath salts I put on a coat of Modge Podge to seal the paint.  Plus it gives the dull wood a shiny finish which looks nice.

How to Make Scented Bath Salts

The easiest way to measure out the bath salts is to use a bowl and 1/4 measuring cup.  This way you can evenly distribute the essential oil of your choice.  For each 1/4 cup scoop of salts place two drops of essential oils.  The oils will clump in the salts so dump them in a bowl and smash it and stir up.  I recommend stirring the salts around in the bowl, spreading out the oils for a couple of minutes.

Then kids can help add the salts to the containers.  Noah filled his teacher’s container for her gift.  Make sure to have a larger bowl underneath to catch any spilled salts.

The essential oil we used for Noah’s teacher was the Peace and Calming essential oil from Young Living.  After a long day teaching 2nd grade students I figured she could use this oil to help with relaxing at night.  For my mom and my daughter’s teacher we used the Lavender essential oil.  I added some Lemon oil to one container to give a nice little twist with the Lavender.

Washi Tape Lid

We used Valentine’s Day decorative washi tape to cover the silver lid.  You can try different patterns or a color of your choice.

  1. What a fantastic idea. This is great for Valentine’s Day, but I think that I’ll make some for Mother’s Day and Christmas. I love the fact that it’s so easy to make and you can customize the scent.

  2. Hi, you just game me a great idea for Christmas gifts but I do have a question. How would I be able to have color on it instead of it being just white?

    1. I believe that food coloring works. I read that somewhere. However, I’m not real sure on whether or not it will change your bath water color or get on your skin. I haven’t tested it out myself.
