Computer Choices for Teens

For T’s 12th birthday she saved her birthday money and purchased one of the inexpensive student laptops that we found at Office Max.  Unfortunately the charger and cord messed up on it within a year and the laptop stopped working.  Since then she has been using our family desktop in the home office.  A few times we have looked at netbooks together but the keyboard keys seem to be so close together that I have had a tendency to shy away from them.  She, of course, loves the tablet pc’s since they are the hot thing right now among teens.

Many schools nowadays are sending home netbooks with all text books as e-books on them.  I think it’s a great idea to give kids access to electronic text books in order to save them from hauling heavy hardback books to and from school.  I remember when I was in middle and high school that I never used my locker.  It was such a hassle to make it to my locker between each class that I would run out of time so I just carried my books for the day.  It was a heavy load!

T will be attending a new middle school next year that is freshly opening in our neighborhood.  I still have hope that they will adapt to the new technology methods.  If not by this year then hopefully by the time she makes it to high school next year.

T’s 14th birthday is coming up next month and I haven’t decided what gift I’ll be purchasing her.  She hasn’t even decided what she wants yet.  I know her main desire for a new computer is to use Facebook, write her blog, watch movies and videos online and search for music.  Those are common things on just about any electronic.

Does your child’s school pass out laptops or netbooks to use?  Are their text books e-books?  If your teen has their own computer, what kind is it?

  1. Our big guy has a netbook that the school provides while he is in classes, part of his 504 plan. I am saving up for a iPad for our guy, he has trouble with keys with his coordination and I think an iPad would be so much better for him.
Not only downloading the text books, but I think if your teen is a reader, she would enjoy downloading her favorites books to read.
    Happy Belated Birthday !
