Walt Disney Pictures: PROM Opens in Theaters Today

On Wednesday T and I went to see a screener of the new Disney movie, PROM which opens in theaters today.  The movie is based on a senior class and the planning that goes into their prom night.  Several plots unfold all within this one movie.  You have the classic story of good girl falling in love with bad boy, dilemma of high school sweethearts going to different colleges in separate states, sophomores falling for seniors and the shy boy that’s clueless about girls.  I’d say the target audience is female, teen to young adult.  Although I did enjoy seeing it with T.

I especially appreciated the role of Nova played by Aimee Teegarden.  Nova is the Class President that works hard to make sure everything goes perfect for this one last night together as a senior class.  The way she explains what prom night means to her makes it seem more than just magical.  The reality of the night being their last night to come together as one large class where high school status doesn’t matter, to cut loose and have fun dancing with everyone outside of cliques.  To say Nova goes above and beyond to make the night a memorable one is an understatement.  She works every day after school for weeks to prepare even when all others turned their backs on it.

I love how Prom shows that even people who are smart enough to be the Class President struggle.  Nova works hard and sacrifices a lot to please others all while neglecting her own social life.  Prom gives you a glimpse into the lives of one person in each group of high school, the jocks, the preps, the loners and even the bad boy.  It shows no matter how perfect you think one may have it, every person has their own skeletons in the closet and none of them have the perfect life.  This is the part that makes the movie real.

I can say, being the chick that I am, this movie made me excited about T’s prom while nervous at the same time.  It made me want to go back and attend a prom myself or at least help decorate for one.  However I do love a good party.

Is this a complete chick flick? Yes, I’d say so.  Will we own it once it comes out on DVD? You bet.  I was also given the chance to interview the Director of PROM, Joe Nussbaum.  It was a great conversation, he was very nice and willing to answer several questions.
