Gab’s Toothache

Sitting at doc office with DD she has a toothache that has ca... on TwitpicFriday Gab came home from school complaining of a toothache.  At first I assumed she was losing another tooth.  Over the past couple of months she has lost four all together.  After pointing at her back tooth and complaining I thought I’d take a look.  She opened her mouth and I tried to attempt to wiggle it.  The tooth didn’t move.  I tilted her head back and tried looking around and I couldn’t see much.  When she was younger she had some dental work done and from what I could see it looked as if her filling had come out.  To be honest it has been several years since she had the fillings and I can’t even remember exactly which teeth had been worked on.  My poor child has been through so much in her seven years that her dental work seems like ages ago.

We had a Halloween party Friday night.  Really the party was for T and her friends although my family came too so Gab wasn’t the only kid under the age 12, matter of fact my nephew is 6.  With all the excitement going on and all the company in the house Gab stayed pretty busy and well distracted.  Needless to say I didn’t hear about the toothache again until bedtime.  At that point she was pretty upset with the pain.  She even woke up in the middle of the night crying in her sleep.  It was horrible.

Saturday she stayed in bed most of the day not feeling well and complaining of her tooth.  By afternoon her face was swollen like she had a golf ball in the side of her cheek.  I called the doctor’s office right away to talk with the on-call nurse.  There wasn’t much they could do after hours but thankfully they are open from 8 AM to noon on weekends for urgent care.  After sleeping all day on Saturday I finally got her out of bed to visit three of the neighbors’ homes for Halloween.  It was the shortest trick-or-treating we have ever done.  She was so miserable yet I knew she wanted to at least try and take part with her brother.  I would have hated for her to miss it completely.  She slept with me all weekend so I could keep an eye on her.

This morning, Sunday, she woke up with her face so swollen at this point her eye was nearly shut.  I took her in to see the Doctor on-call at 10:20 AM and they prescribed her antibiotics and pain medication.  I was able to get two doses down her today and plan to call dentists first thing in the morning until I find one that will see her right away.  Her pain tolerance has always been so high but I was able to finally convince her to take her first pain pill tonight before bed.  She has refused up until now but since she has hardly eaten anything and I know she is hurting I didn’t want to increase the risk for seizures.

Wish me luck in finding a dentist tomorrow that will see her.  Although I’ve heard they might not do anything until the antibiotics decrease the swelling.  My poor baby!  Until then… I worry.

  1. Aww poor little girl! My better half has terrible teeth problems and has had abscesses which resulted in similar swelling, unfortunately no dentist would work on him until the antibiotics had taken effect both reduce swelling and infection as well as reduce the risk of things like endocarditis from releasing the “grossness” in to the blood stream. I hope those antibiotics take care of that horrible bump soon though, tooth ache is NEVER any fun 🙁
