Ready to get crafty for your cat?  Follow the below steps to turn a door mat into this cute DIY Cat Litter Box Mat.  You can repurpose an old door mat or buy an inexpensive mat to customize for your cat.

Creating a personalized cat paw mat serves as a cute place to collect the litter from their paws or you can customize the mat to sit their food and water bowls on to prevent any messes from getting on the carpet.  This DIY is extremely easy with a few simple steps.  You can get as creative as you wish.

Supplies

• Door Mat – used or new
• Stencils
• Sponge Brush
• Paint
• Paint Pen (optional)
• Paint Brush (optional)

DIY Litter Box Cat Paw Mat

First, find a door mat to use.  You can repurpose an old mat outside by washing it by hand, drying, and spray painting the entire mat a solid color.  Or you can pick up a cheap mat to use.  The mat I selected was very thin, which I preferred over those thick mats you see outside some front doors since it was going on the inside of the house.

Once you decide what you want your mat to say, lay out your stencils.  You can personalize your cat’s litter box mat by adding their name.  We used paint in the color of my teen’s bedroom so it matched her decor.

Remember to wipe the stencil off between applications, otherwise the paint will smear on the mat.  I recommend using a sponge brush to dab paint on the stencil since the mat is made of coarse material.  This will help make sure the paint goes on evenly for the entire letter.

After adding the words using our stencils, I decided to give the letters a little pop by using a white paint pen.  I outlined the bottom of each letter so it would stand out more against the dark gray mat.  This is completely optional and by preference.  You may even decide to free hand the entire design instead of using stencils or outline the full letter instead of just the bottom.

To give the mat some more decoration we created cat paw prints using a paint brush.  This was super simple, by dipping the brush and laying it flat on the mat for each toe print.  I painted the paw like an upside down heart.

Litter Box Mat

Once your mat is dry, place it in front of your cat’s litter box.  Slide the edge of the mat slightly under the litter box so it will hold in place.  We truly don’t need a mat in front of Hermione’s litter box to catch litter, it is purely for decoration.  But doesn’t it look cute?
