Homemade Dinosaur Pop-tarts: Disney’s The Good Dinosaur

|

My son loves Dinosaurs so we are pretty excited about Disney’s The Good Dinosaur movie coming out this Thanksgiving.  To celebrate we created homemade peanut butter and jelly dinosaur pop-tarts.  Plus, you can download free coloring pages and a game to entertain your kids while you wait for the movie to open in theaters.

How to Make Homemade Pop-tarts

Using pre-made pie crust makes baking your own pop-tarts easy.  Roll out your pie crust flat.  I used our dinosaur sandwich cutter to cut the pie crust, however you can also use a cookie cutter.  You will need two pieces of pie crust for each tart.  One piece for the bottom and one for the top.

For the peanut butter and jelly filling I mixed one spoonful of each in a small bowl.  This way the jelly would not ooze out in chunks.  The mixture was smoother for a pop-tart filling.  I added a small amount to the center of each dinosaur and a little dab on the head; while avoiding the edges.

Once you place the top piece on, gently pull the edges together.  You can use your fingers to pinch the two pieces closed or use a fork.

Bake your pop-tarts on a cookie sheet in the oven on 400-degrees for 9 minutes or until they are golden brown.  Watch them closely so the edges do not burn.  If any of the filling comes out on the sides, no worries, simply wipe it away.

While the pop-tarts cool you can make your icing.

In a small mixing bowl add your 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk.  Stir until the two ingredients are mixed thoroughly.  Add one drop of green food coloring and stir well.  Once your pop-tarts are cool you can pour the icing over the dinosaurs.  Make sure you pour slowly since the icing will run.

These are perfect for breakfast, a quick snack or a nice dinosaur treat.  We created dinosaur themed bento lunches and they were a hit!

“The Good Dinosaur” asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?  Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa) makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

Directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream (“Cars 2”), Disney•Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” opens in theaters on Nov. 25, 2015
