DIY Painted Fairy Garden Furniture
When the kids and I decided we were going to make a fairy garden we took to Pinterest to find inspiration. There are so many creative ideas online along with several websites that you can purchase furniture for your fairy garden. Instead of ordering online we headed to our local craft stores to see what we could find. Hobby Lobby has their own doll house and furniture isle. This is where I found several items. You could purchase items that were already finished or find great DIY pieces. Also on their wooden isle I was able to find miniature pots and spools that we knew would make great additions to our fairy garden.
Each package came with a minimum of four pieces which worked perfectly since the kids were making their own gardens. The small fence and wheel barrel was found in the doll house section.
Supplies: (all optional depending on your garden)
- Wooden Doll House Furniture
- Popsicle Sticks
- Small Wooden Objects for Crafts
- Paint (the kind of paint depends on if your garden will be outside or inside)
- Small Paint Brushes
- Spray Paint Diamond Dust (small glitter for top coat)
- Modge Podge
- Glitter
We each painted our miniature pots different colors and use the wooden spools as stools or tables for our fairies. After painting our wooden fairy garden accessories with a paint brush we let them dry. Since they are wood they dried fairly quick. After we painted them we decided to add glitter. What fairy doesn’t love glitter dust? Since the objects are small regular sprinkle glitter looks pretty large. I found a can of Diamond Dust spray paint at Hobby Lobby that we used on some of the objects as a light finish – top coat. To hold the large glitter on the top of the brown pot we used Modge Podge since it dries clear.
The most tedious object to paint was the wheel barrel since we wanted the bottom to be a different color than the top. I had to use the smallest paint brush I could find and go very slow. Our next step is to use small gravel and cover it in glitter to look like diamonds inside the wheel barrel. My son thought of that idea to make it look like the fairies have been mining. Pretty clever if you ask me.
Now all of the furniture is ready to add to our gardens.
Quick Tip: If your order is going to be outdoors make sure you use paint that is weather resistant. The bottles of paint were clearly marked at Hobby Lobby and we were able to get various colors for around $1.25 each. Hobby Lobby always has a 40% off coupon on their website for one full price item that you can bring up from your smartphone in the store!
Do you have a fairy garden? Which accessories have you added? Do your kids enjoy crafting with your or planting a garden?
