Having a large family, as parents we stay pretty busy. It is not often that we get a night away without at least one kid in tow. We spend so much time planning all the fun things we want to do with our kids that we forget to plan for ourselves. That is why we have come to learn how to have a successful date night at home.

In June my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary. Actually, the word celebrated is not accurate. Our daughter had surgery on our anniversary so I spent the night in the hospital while Andrew stayed home with our son. Not much of a celebration. A few days later we celebrated Father’s Day as a family with the kids and then for the next few weeks we have been helping our daughter recover.

A summer wedding on the beach was beautiful but we quickly realized that now our anniversary falls during the kids’ summer school break. No quick lunch date anniversary celebration while they are at school. Some summers our anniversary is in the middle of our vacation. With our kids playing sports and attending camps, often it cannot be avoided.

This summer has been crazy hectic! One child had surgery, one broke a bone, we took a long trip, both took on new projects at work, we had some house repairs, and I could go on. All within a span of a month and a half. Finally, we decided to spend a little quiet time at home. I picked up all the items we needed for a successful date night at home in one stop.

With our kids being old enough to entertain themselves and usually wrapped up in their own activities, we are able to sneak away to our bedroom to catch a flick in peace every once in a while. With our kids ranging in age from 11 to 20, we usually watch the same movies and television shows together. We bond as a family in the living room but on that occasion when we need to recharge as parents, we give ourselves a break.

While supplies last, shoppers can pick up an in store coupon at Kroger to save $1 when you purchase sushi and smartwater 1L or Diet Coke 20oz.

We love smartwater and the sushi at the counter at Kroger is made fresh in front of you. It is a win win.

To start the date off I picked up a fresh bouquet of flowers for only $4 while at Kroger! I love fresh cut flowers. They smell nice and look beautiful. Plus, it gives your room a little romantic essence without the expense of floral delivery.

To keep the date night at home simple, we selected a movie from our collection to watch. However, you can browse online-streaming or rent a movie while at the store for your entertainment. Our number one goal was to relax together.

I picked up some salad mix to go with our sushi and two different sushi rolls. My husband has never been a huge fan of sushi so I went with rolls I knew he would enjoy. Both of these do not have huge chunks of raw seafood in them, which I think was his previous dislike.

I convinced him to try both of the rolls and he loved them! One included fried shrimp, which he really likes. Laughing is key to a great date night. Convincing him to let me feed him sushi was pretty hilarious… for me. We laughed a lot!

Tips for hosting a successful date night at home:

  • Get dressed for date night – even if you are not leaving your house, dress like you are.
  • Pickup food or prepare a meal that is different than your usual family dinner.
  • Light some candles.
  • Pick a romantic movie – comedies and action movies are great on other nights.
  • Laugh. Have fun. Enjoy your time together.

My love of fresh sushi alongside refreshing smartwater is the perfect pairing. I was happy to see that I could pick these items up at my local Kroger and save money. Check out these other great pairings for Coca-Cola products.

  1. I love the idea of having a date night at home. We did this recently, as we have a 6-month-old girl. For us, it was HBO Now and a sampler of craft beers at H-E-B. It really was the best!
