Fredericksburg, Texas – Hill Country Weekend Getaway

My wife and I decided to take a weekend getaway to Fredericksburg, Texas for our anniversary. If you have never been it’s a great place to visit. Fredericksburg is a quaint German town that makes for a quick getaway from DFW – just northwest of San Antonio, Texas. The town is filled with little shops and unique yet fun things to do.

If you love the Christmas season you will really love visiting this beautiful town during the winter – this is actually the location we got engaged in December 2013 – gorgeous light display.

My wife and I stayed at the cabin rented out by One Quilt Place. The Historic 1883 Log Cabin made for a really secluded and romantic getaway. We loved staying here and would visit again. One night we decided to eat dinner in – which worked out perfect because the cabin had a small stove and oven for us to use.

bat cave

One of the things my wife and I found online that fascinated us was the bat cave.  Every night the bats fly out to feed.  There is a viewing area that you can sit in to watch all the bats fly out at the same time.  Unfortunately, while we were there it was too dark to see them when it came time for them to leave the cave.  But if you look closely you can see the bats flying around at the back of the cave.  So we did get to see them inside from a distance which was neat.

While at the Old Tunnel State Park – located at 10619 Old San Antonio Road we enjoy hiking and taking a walk on the nature trail.

road enchanted rock

The Enchanted Rock is a must see. It cost $7 a person and kids under 13 are free. My wife and I spent about four hours walking and exploring the Enchanted Rock. Up at the top the breathtaking view went on for miles. One of the cool things during our hike was finding a cave at the top to explore.

This photo shows my wife’s excitement for making it to the top!  If you go make sure you have your tennis shoes because your boots aren’t made for walking here. One thing I thought was cool was all the greenery that was growing out of the rock.

tree and us

This was one of my favorite spots to take photos due to this tree and the view behind it. I was glad I brought my tripod so my wife and I could set my camera on a timer and take some photos together.

After a long hike up 1,825 feet and over three miles, there was a refreshing breeze at the top of the Enchanted Rock with plenty of places to sit and relax.  We just enjoyed the view.

strawberry

At the Marburger Orchard you can pick your own fruit. Depending on the season you can pick a variety of produce from fruits to vegetables.  While we were there people were picking strawberries, blackberries and peaches.  I had never picked strawberries at a strawberry patch before. This was a great experience for my wife and I to do together – we had a blast. I even think we had a contest to see who could find the biggest one. I’d like to think I won. Just kidding, that photo was just to show the different sizes we found and picked.

bench both

To end our trip we decided to stop at the Wildseed Farms. We enjoyed walking around the trails they had to look at different flowers along with other plants. They even had a few small waterfalls. The best part of stopping here was taking photos with my beautiful wife.

lady bug

I had to share this little guy or should I say big guy because this was the largest lady bug my wife and I had ever seen. We found him at the Wildseed Farms.  The photo does not show the size comparison very well but he was at least a half an inch long.
