How to Make a Fairy Garden

With summer right around the corner it is time to get outside and plant a garden!  But not just any garden, a Fairy Garden…  Our family had such a great time designing this garden to our own liking.  We bought a bird bath to to turn into a little home for our fairies.  After painting some Fairy Garden furniture and then even creating a cute little banner – it was now time to put it all together.

The kids and I each picked out some green plants and small flowers for the garden.  At our local nursery they even had an area for indoor and/or terrarium gardens.  I also Googled the best plants for a Fairy Garden to get ideas.  Since the amount of soil isn’t very deep and our garden was staying inside with only sunshine through the window, we wanted to make sure we had plants that would easily survive.

Any planting soil will work.  We bought a bag while at our nursery.  The kids enjoyed helping me spread the dirt around and even it out smoothly.  This gave them an excuse to get their hands dirty.

We made a small outline of where we wanted each plant to go before we started planting.  This helped prevent us from running out of room or having to move one of the small trees.  Since the plants are so tiny we didn’t want to risk moving them around too much and break their roots, causing them not to survive.

We made a small cottage for our fairies out of bamboo.  Since this was the main attraction we put it down first.  Then worked around it to add the other accessories such as: wheel barrel, small pot, and finally the plants.

The kids gathered some rocks from our yard and made a walkway to the cottage.  Pretty nice landscaping if I say so myself. I actually wish this was done on a much larger scale surrounding my own home with beautiful trees and plants.

Fairy Garden Bamboo Cottage

We wanted our fairies to have a little house so we made one out of bamboo.  The bamboo cottage really made our Fairy Garden complete.  Plus it was super easy to make!

  • Small Handheld Saw
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Paint

We cut the bamboo sticks into small 2 1/2 inch pieces.  Then we made the cottage in a square by hot glueing each piece together to make four sides and a roof.  Feel free to get creative in this step and make your cottage a different shape or even use other materials for the roof.  We kept things simple.

Once the hot glue dries completely, which does not take very long, pull off the excess glue.  Hot glue gets stringy and you’ll be able to easily peel away the extra mess once it’s cold again.

For the door on the front of our cottage we cut a small piece off the end of a popsicle stick.

Don’t forget to paint the door!  We plan to make ours a bright color so it stands out.  Plus we will add sparkles.  What is a fairy cottage without sparkles?

Do you have a Fairy Garden?  Do your kids love to help plant?

  3. Fairy gardens are so much fun! We bought a kit not too long ago and I think it would be more special if it were 100% unique – I’m going to start looking for a good pot to start us off. This will be a fun project over the summer for my daughter and a friend.
